This book is dedicated to every woman fighting for her fundamental human rights, including the freedom to think, worship, and make choices about her own life.
Ali continued to strike me with his fists. His hands tightened around my neck, and I began to lose consciousness. Then he threw me against the wall, yanking a chunk of my hair in the process. Brutally, he slapped my face. In the corner of my room stood a six-foot-tall artificial sunflower, which he seized and used to whip my body. The wire inside the flower dug into my skin, leaving painful welts along my arms and legs.
"You will not bring shame to the family by leaving Islam; I will kill you myself!" he shouted. Ali's anger was palpable, and he believed his brutal actions were justified in the name of Islam. He thought he was protecting Allah and his faith.
My mother came into the room and stared at me, saying, “Your father will kill you today. Just wait for him to return home.” In the past, such a promise would have left me shaking with fear, but this time I felt God’s presence and had no fear in my heart.
My father was meeting with the Sheiks, worshipping and seeking Allah. He was expected to return home that night. Ali looked at me and said, “I always told Father not to let you go to school. You could have been better off married with children. Now you’ve brought shame to the family.” With that, he punched me in the face and walked out of my room.
Later at night, I heard my father's car pull into the driveway. I could die any minute now!
